Top Staging Tips for Better Short-Term Rental Photography

Here are clean, practical staging ideas you can use to elevate an STR shoot. I’m going to push past the obvious stuff and give you things that actually make a difference on camera.

1. Entryway / First Impression

Keep it simple but intentional.

  • A clean doormat + one plant + one styled console (not clutter).

  • Add a key bowl, one book, and a small lamp for warmth.

  • Avoid personal items or anything with text unless it’s neutral.

2. Living Room

You want “inviting,” not “lived in.”

  • Throw blanket draped with purpose — avoid messy folds.

  • One or two pillows max; fluff them properly.

  • Coffee table: rule of three — candle, plant/greenery, book.

  • If it has a fireplace, light it. It makes a huge difference in photos.

3. Kitchen

Make it feel luxurious but not “busy.”

  • Clear almost everything.

  • Add ONE cutting board, citrus bowl, or a small coffee setup.

  • If it's high-end: add sparkling water + clean glasses.

  • No soaps/scrub brushes/sponge in photos.

4. Dining Area

Show that it’s ready to host.

  • Set with simple placemats + two plates (don’t fully set for 8–10).

  • Add a single centerpiece—greenery works best.

  • If there’s a view, keep the table low-profile so it doesn’t block it.

5. Bedrooms

Aim for crisp, hotel-clean.

  • Crisp white bedding layered with texture.

  • One blanket folded at the foot.

  • Two pillows + two shams. Stop there.

  • Bedside tables: lamp + tiny plant or book. Nothing more.

6. Bathrooms

Hotel vibe wins every time.

  • Rolled white towels or stacked folded ones.

  • One small tray with: soap, lotion, or a tiny plant.

  • Hide everything else: trash cans, personal items, plungers, cleaning bottles.

  • Close toilet seats. Every time.

7. Outdoor Spaces

This is where most STR hosts miss the mark.

  • Stage one “experience”:

    • fire pit with two chairs + blankets

    • s’mores tray

    • cozy Adirondacks + wine glasses

    • hot tub with folded towels on a bench

  • Light any outdoor string lights or lanterns.

  • Remove covers from outdoor furniture.

8. “Lifestyle” Setup (This is what sells the STR)

These are single vignettes you add briefly for detail shots:

  • Travel guides + sunglasses + coffee mug on a porch chair.

  • Charcuterie board with simple, clean items (don’t overdo).

  • Open book + throw on a reading nook.

  • Board game set up like someone is about to play.

One or two of these vignettes is enough. Don’t overshoot lifestyle scenes.

9. Tech + Amenities

If it’s a selling point, make it look intentional.

  • Workspace with laptop + notepad + pen.

  • Streaming TV paused on a simple screen (not busy graphics).

  • Coffee bar: arrange mugs evenly, add one prop element.

10. Things to Remove Before You Shoot

These kill the vibe on camera:

  • Remotes (unless they’re intentionally placed)

  • Coasters (only use if decorative)

  • Cords, charging cables

  • Oversized signage (“Gather,” “Bless This Home,” etc.)

  • Dark or bulky rugs that make the space look small

  • Excess blankets and pillows
